Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the right to question specific decisions made by the official, mirroring the practice already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
