Sam Fender has donated the complete sum of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize cash to the MVT, which functions to protect the Britain's independent music venues.

Fender was awarded the prize on October 16 as his latest record his work was declared the top album of the last 12 months.

The musician has opted to hand the money over to the trust, in recognition of the crucial part small stages fulfilled in his early career.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the performances I did around the North East, and beyond, when I was beginning," remarked the artist. "These locations are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

Beginning in 2023, more than 150 of these venues have permanently closed – roughly 16% of the entire UK sector.

In the last year, well-known musicians like the band Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by adding a small levy to their ticket costs, which goes to help local stages.

He also participated, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to assist numerous small stages across Britain.

These funds supported spaces that were dealing with possible closure due to challenges caused by flooding, fire incidents and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Additional spaces were granted funding support in upgrading amenities and technical equipment that positively impacted musicians and concertgoers.

"The notion that money from performances in big venues helps the independent spots, where it all starts for artists like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has stated.

Previously, they donated their prize money to the local youth club that nurtured their act, in addition to other local music groups.

Additionally the 1994 recipients M People contributed their winnings to a MS organization after a close contact was found to have the illness.

"Winning was sufficient," stated vocalist Small. "The money was the bonus but we didn't require the extra, because we had the main prize. So our winning affected the lives of others."

Last week, the MVT revealed it had protected several grassroots venues in south-east England, by bringing them into local control.

The first in the city and The Croft in that location were purchased under the community ownership program, which is funded by a national body and music fans who acquire "stakes" in the properties.
