From Acclaim to Rage: Conservative Response to Jeffrey Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Conservative reactions to the limited release of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of former President Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.

Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Rhetoric

Justice Department officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the redaction process.

Concerns Prompted by Redactions

While the former president's identity and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt serious questions about what may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans swiftly demanded increased transparency.

“The public are furious and disengaging,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the law, and implied that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump egregiously does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.

A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Swing In Support of the Disclosure

But, some rightwing pundits and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the administration.

The release—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.

Yet some are not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, enabled some conservative figures to go on the offensive.

“It’s pretty rich how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.

“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”

Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement

Clinton has consistently stated he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing these documents for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.

“The release is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and hide forever. So they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.

Overall Rightwing Commentary Remains Muted

Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was comparatively muted after the release, particularly when compared with the vociferous demands for transparency that came before the legislative approval to pass a bill mandating the files' release.

Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal advocates for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing personalities were provided physical folders of files that included little new data.
