The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
